De zomervakantie - wanneer vrijwel alle politici, ambtenaren en zelfs sommige journalisten hun gereedschap neerleggen - zal welkome verlichting brengen. Maar de rentrée ziet er niet gemakkelijker uit. De Commissievoorzitter zal op de ochtend van 10 september weer voor het Europees Parlement moeten verschijnen om een Staat van de Europese Unie-toespraak (SOTEU) te geven, waarin ze haar werk tot nu toe zal verdedigen en haar prioriteiten voor de rest van het jaar zal uiteenzetten. Groenen links van mij, Patriotten rechts: Hier is von der Leyen, vast in het midden met de EU. En het bij elkaar houden van haar fragiele liberale coalitie te midden van steeds meer gepolariseerde politiek zal moeilijk blijken, met scheuren die ontstaan op het gebied van handel, concurrentievermogen, klimaatbeleid en de manier waarop zij en haar innerlijke cirkel het blok commanderen. Politico sprak met enkele van de partijen die ze zal moeten overtuigen tijdens de SOTEU - spoiler alert, ze zijn niet blij. Huwelijk in moeilijkheden: Von der Leyen vertrouwde op de centrumlinkse Socialisten en Democraten (S&D), de op een na grootste groep in het Parlement, om haar herverkiezing veilig te stellen. Maar ze raken gefrustreerd door wat zij zien als haar weigering om zich aan haar kant van de deal te houden over huisvesting, arbeidsrechten en sociale zekerheid. "We hebben von der Leyen al gewaarschuwd dat we duidelijke tekenen van betrokkenheid nodig hebben, en de SOTEU zal een cruciaal moment zijn," zei groepsleider Iratxe García tegen Playbook. Een pro-EU-liberale alliantie van de Europese Volkspartij, S&D en Groenen, zei ze, is de enige manier om de verrechtsing van de macht te voorkomen. "Daarvoor moet dit werken voor alle betrokken partijen, en dat is tot nu toe niet het geval." "Het eerste jaar van deze Commissie is [tot nu toe] niet goed geweest," zei Bas Eickhout, voorzitter van de Green/EFA-groep. Hij beschuldigde de EPP van von der Leyen ervan "openlijk samen te werken met de destructieve en anti-EU-verrechtsing" en "te capituleren voor de handelsverzoeken van Trump". Terwijl haar eerste termijn "visionair" was, zei Eickhout, "heeft het eerste jaar van de tweede termijn die erfenis verzwakt."
